]]> Chez Maxillo 3D, on aime s’impliquer dans notre communauté!

C’est pour cette raison qu’au printemps 2022, la clinique a fait un don pour l’événement Marche SP pour la Société de la SP qui vient en aide aux personnes atteintes de sclérose en plaques. Cette marche a eu lieu le 29 mai 2022. Chantal, une employée de la clinique, y participe tous les ans et nous aimons encourager les membres de notre équipe.

Également, les Drs Duval et Di Lullo ainsi que certains membres de l’équipe ont participé au Marchethon Familial de l’hôpital de Lakeshore le 4 juin 2022. Le but de l’activité est de soutenir la cause de la santé mentale.

If you are anxious about visiting the dentist, delaying or ignoring necessary treatment is not the best option. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons receive extensive and specialized training in the area of pain and anxiety control, including training in anesthesia.  To keep anxious patients comfortable and able to undergo certain treatments, oral surgeons offer sedation  through oral, inhalational or intravenous routes. Intravenous sedation is used to produce a calm and relaxed state. While patients may be aware of their surroundings, they are generally relaxed and will not remember the much of the procedure itself.  To be able to offer such care to their patients, oral and maxillofacial surgeons undergo 5-7 years of hospital based surgical training and residency, after obtaining their dental degree.  Furthermore, their offices are usually different from a general dentistry office, as they require specialized equipment to safely provide anesthesia services.  Your surgeon can discuss your needs prior to your procedure and review possible risks and benefits of each approach.  More information about anesthesia options could be found on our website.

Halloween is just around the corner and we all know that for children, Halloween means candy and lots of it!

However, when your child consumes sugary food or drinks, the bacteria (germs) in the dental plaque on the teeth mix with the sugars in the candy to make a mild acid. This acid attacks the hard outer layer of the tooth, called the enamel. If the dental plaque isn’t removed every day by brushing and flossing, over time, the enamel gets soft and a cavity forms. The damage to the tooth depends on how much sugar goes in the mouth and how long it stays there. In other words, the longer and more often sugar touches the teeth, the more damage it can do.  Full article…

  • Do your children take part in activities involving risk of falls or collisions? Make sure they wear a MOUTH GUARD.  Ask your dentist to make you a CUSTOMIZED MOUTH GUARD or purchase a pre-formed one in a sporting goods store (Boil & Bite).
  • “My child knocked out a baby tooth.”  Contact your child’s dentist IMMEDIATELY to minimize discomfort and prevent infection.  Rinse the mouth with cold water and apply COLD COMPRESSES to reduce swelling.
  • “My child knocked out a permanent tooth.”  Find the tooth and rinse it gently in cool water ONLY.  REPLACE THE TOOTH in the socket and hold it there with clean gauze or a wash cloth.  If you cannot put the tooth back in the socket, place it in a clean container, preferably with cold milk or the child’s own saliva.  DO NOT store the tooth in water.
  • “My child has a chipped/broken tooth.“  Contact your dentist IMMEDIATELY.  Rinse the mouth with cold water and apply COLD COMPRESSES to reduce swelling.  If you can find the broken tooth fragment, TAKE IT TO THE DENTIST.

    ]]>     Third molars, also commonly referred to as wisdom teeth, are located in the back corners of the mouth and usually grow in the late teens or early 20s. Wisdom teeth need to be extracted when they are unable to properly enter the mouth. They may grow sideways, partially erupt or even remain completely trapped beneath the gum and bone. Teeth that do not fully erupt are what we call “impacted teeth,” and can cause problems such as tumors or cysts that can destroy the jawbone or damage perfectly healthy adjacent teeth. Partially erupted and some impacted teeth also allow bacteria and food to grow, which potentially leads to gum disease. While not all wisdom teeth may need to be extracted, many certainly need to be managed.​

    Generally, in young adults, wisdom teeth have incomplete root development, which makes the extractions less complicated and/or risky. However,   as wisdom teeth continue to grow, their roots become longer, stronger, and may interfere with sensory nerves or sinuses.​

    After their training in dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgeons receive an additional 5 to 7 years of hospital-based surgical training and residency.  This rigorous and intensive training includes time spent on rotation to general surgery, ENT, plastic surgery, anesthesiology and many other medical rotations, in order for them to be eligible for national Royal College of Dentist Fellowship certification examinations. They are specialized to provide their patients the best advice on managing their wisdom teeth, based on a thorough examination, imaging and discussion with patients.Man

As patients strive towards good oral hygiene and seek “perfect” smiles, the roles of dental specialists have become increasingly important. Specialists must possess sophisticated knowledge of the latest techniques to keep up with demand. However, patients are not always aware of the specific roles of specialists. An analogy could be made with medicine, where general dentists, as general practitioners (GPs), are responsible for the overall dental health of their patients on a long-term basis, while specialists are consulted for specific treatments or conditions.

    A common misconception  is made between dental surgeons (doctors of dental surgery) and oral surgeons (oral and maxillofacial surgeons).  While the former offer general dentistry treatments such as cleanings, fillings and crowns, the latter specialize in surgery of the teeth, face, mouth and jaw. After their training in dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgeons receive an additional 5 to 7 years of hospital-based surgical training and residency.  This rigorous and intensive training includes time spent on rotation to general surgeons, ENT, plastic surgeons, anesthesiologists and many other specialties, in order for them to be eligible for national Royal College of Dentist Fellowship certification examinations. Their specialty allows them to perform both major and minor surgical procedures with ease, which translates to minimization risks, complications and maximization of post-operative recovery for patients.
