The damaged tissue is removed along with the end of the root tip. If necessary, a root-end filling is placed to prevent re-infection of the root and the gum is sutured. The bone naturally heals around the root over a period of months restoring full function.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This surgery is often indicated in patients with one or more of the following symptoms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Root canal has failed<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Teeth with unusually shaped roots<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Secondary canals cannot be cleaned (with the usual root canal treatment)<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Presence of a cyst around the root or the tooth itself<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Fractured tooth<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">An apicoectomy is usually a permanent solution for long term life of a tooth. The most common risk is that the procedure fails and the tooth needs to be extracted. However, should you decide to forgo such a surgery, then the only alternative is to remove the tooth.
