Symptoms occur when the joints of the jaw and the chewing muscles (muscles of mastication) do not work together correctly. If a TMJ problem or disorder occurs, it can make eating, talking and even yawning quite painful. Reasons that could be the cause of a TMJ disorder include clenching or grinding of the teeth, tightening jaw muscles, disease or in<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1431 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/maxillo3d.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/AdobeStock_39032546-222x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"222\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maxillo3d.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/AdobeStock_39032546-222x300.jpeg 222w, https:\/\/maxillo3d.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/AdobeStock_39032546-768x1037.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/maxillo3d.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/AdobeStock_39032546-759x1024.jpeg 759w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 222px) 100vw, 222px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">jury. \u00a0The cause of TMJ dysfunction may involve the muscles of the joint, the bite or the joint itself.<\/p>\n<h4>What are the symptoms of a TMJ disorder?<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Clicking or popping of the joints<\/li>\n<li>Tender or painful jaw muscles<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty or pain upon open or closing the mouth<\/li>\n<li>Frequent headaches or neck aches<\/li>\n<li>Pain in the temporo-mandibular joint<\/li>\n<li>Ringing or buzzing sound in the ears<\/li>\n<li>Sensation of stuffiness, pressure blockage or pain in the ears<\/li>\n<li>Dizziness or light-headedness<\/li>\n<li>Decreased jaw opening<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you recognize one or more of these symptoms as being yours, you probably have a TMJ problem. Clinical and radiographic examination of the jaw allows the surgeon to establish a proper diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sequence for treatment varies with the diagnosis and the individual. It is important to note that the treatment usually works best with a team approach of self-care joined with professional care. The initial goals are to relieve the muscle spasm and joint pain. This is usually accomplished with the help of anti-inflammatory medication, muscle relaxants or a pain relievers. Steroids can be injected directly into the joint to reduce pain and inflammation. Home care is important at this stage and includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Resting your jaw<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Keeping your teeth apart when not swallowing or eating<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eating soft foods<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Applying ice and heat<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Avoiding nail biting and gum chewing<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Decreasing cafeine intake<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Practicing good posture<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Stress management techniques, acupuncture, physiotherapy or osteopathy may also be indicated.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In certain cases, the making of an occlusal plate (mouth guard) which is worn at night, helps relax the jaw muscles and reduce pain.
