Malgré le rejet de deux écoles en raison de la couleur de sa peau, il fut l’un des six premiers admis dans le programme dentaire de l’Université Harvard. Diplômé en 1869, il ouvrit un cabinet dentaire à Washington, DC. Son héritage perdure à travers la branche de l’Association Dentaire Nationale à DC, nommée la Robert T. Freeman Dental Society en son honneur. Le parcours de Freeman nous inspire à œuvrer pour l’égalité et l’excellence.

During Black History Month, let’s celebrate the resilience and triumph of Robert Tanner Freeman, the first African American to receive a dental degree in the United States. Despite facing rejection from two schools due to the color of his skin, he emerged as one of the first six individuals admitted to Harvard University’s dental program. Upon graduating in 1869, he established a dental practice in Washington, DC. His legacy lives on through the DC arm of the National Dental Association, known as The Robert T. Freeman Dental Society. Freeman’s journey inspires us to strive for equality and excellence.
